Fear was the topic of discussion on March 11th’s episode of The Carrie Diaries. Each one of the main characters had to deal with something that made them afraid. While some flopped, other’s flourished when it came to journeying into “The Great Unknown”.
Now that Carrie’s secret double life is exposed her dad has put her on house arrest…again. While Carrie still dreams of Manhattan, she takes comfort in the fact that she and Kydd are officially a couple. They even have a mash-up nickname “Kyddshaw.” In a world infested with TomKats, Brangelinas and Bennifers(versions 1 and 2.0), Kyddshaw feels so not 80s. I don’t remember a time when Sean Penn and Madonna were ever Pedonna (or would it be MadPenn?). To rectify this error, the writers have added in splashes of 80s inspired training montages and Rubik’s cubes to lure the audience back into thinking that it’s 1985.
It seems as though Carrie is one of those people who think that since something good is happening to them then something really horrible is just around the corner. It is understandable considering she just lost her mother and is still grieving for her. Not wanting to risk the chance of ending up hurt by Kydd she tries to push him away when he offers his assistance to help track down that tricky Dorrit.
Little Dorrit has flown the coop for the who-knows-how-many time. By now, one would assume that Tom Bradshaw would’ve put a lock on her window or at least cut down the tree right outside her bedroom. Luckily for us Tom Bradshaw is too busy navigating the world as a single man and trying to understand newfangled ideas about women’s sexual liberation. Thankfully, he didn’t take the advice of his sleazy lawyer friend. He did take the advice of Larissa Loughlin however, who for some reason is now “dating” sleazy lawyer. It was surreal to see Larissa give out actual good advice—good parenting advice nonetheless, it was as if the entire Carrie Diaries-universe slipped down the rabbit’s hole into Wonderland. After traversing in Wonderland with Larissa, Tom finds it in his heart to get over his fear of Carrie growing up and lets Carrie return to her internship at Interview magazine.
But before Carrie can return to her beloved Interview, she first has to track down Dorrit. With Kydd’s help, they discover that Dorrit has run off to the iconic Chelsea Hotel. Apparently Dorrit is a big Sex Pistols fan, more importantly she’s a Sid and Nancy fan. Being a big fan she decides to go down to Manhattan to view the place where Sid Vicious, allegedly, killed Nancy Spungen.
Side note: Despite what Kydd kept repeating, it was never proven that Sid killed Nancy nor was he ever officially tried, and I have to admit that it really did bother me when characters in the show kept saying otherwise.
With this little expedition into Manhattan Carrie got over her fear of taking everything so seriously. She learned that it’s okay to go with the flow sometimes and to live life the way you want to live it. Amazingly, Dorrit was the one who taught her that lesson, which reassured my belief that the world would be a much better place if we all acted like Dorrit (just kidding).

The only other two main cast members to appear in “The Great Unknown” were Mouse and Walt (Maggie was absent this episode). Mouse, predictably, had another one-dimensional storyline filled with cliché 80’s references. She had to face her fear that she isn’t the best at everything she does and that there are people in the world who are better than her, a fact that she has trouble dealing with. Walt faced his fear concerning his confusing sexuality by maybe coming out to his girlfriend/ex-girlfriend, Donna LaDonna. The biggest surprise of the episode was Donna herself. I had her pegged as a stereotypical mean girl with zero empathy for anything or anyone, but her reactions to Walt proved that beyond that mean girl exterior lays someone with a real heart. I look forward to watching Walt and Donna’s interactions now that they’ve become good friends and more importantly I can’t wait to see how Maggie is going to deal with it all.
Alas, there was still no sign of Morrissey but double helpings of “Eye of the Tiger” helped dull the pain of not seeing him.
