TV Review: The Carrie Diaries – 1×07 “Caught”

THE CARRIE DIARIES

Things are starting to get serious on The Carrie Diaries. After a disastrous Thanksgiving dinner which ended in Sebastian Kydd spending the holiday with Carrie and her family, Carrie finds herself caught between two boys (which coincidentally was the title for this week’s episode: “Caught”).  Trying to swallow down the feelings she still (for some inexplicable reason) holds for Kydd, she invites her new boyfriend, George, to the Winter Ball at her school. Loyal viewers will remember that George is the son of Tom Bradshaw’s sleazy lawyer friend–that fact will be important for later. Carrie’s not the only one dealing with brewing relationship troubles, Mouse’s grades are starting to slip from A+’s to B+’s due to her spending far too much time doing the horizontal tango with her boyfriend Seth Cohen. This cultivates to leading the two lovers to break up. Don’t worry, Seth, there’s always Summer… wait, wrong show. Meanwhile, Maggie is once again having problems with Walt that she just can’t put her finger on. This episode raised a question for me: where is Walt? This is the second episode that he hasn’t been featured in, which is odd to me since he has such a juicy storyline. I can only hope that when the secret of his sexuality does come out he gets his own episode and not be shoved off to become some B/C storyline.

Another question that I have that has nagged me since the beginning of this series: why does Carrie never feel insulted that Larissa thinks she’s older than Carrie’s actual age? Carrie doesn’t act like an adult; she acts like any other 16-year old that attends high school. This begs to reason that Larissa thinks Carrie looks older than she really is, while 16-year-olds might think that is a good thing, anybody over the age of 20 know that looking older than you really are is never good.  Anyway, Larissa offers Carrie an internship at Interview magazine, something that Carrie really wants to do but her father unknowingly adds a little guilt to her decision of trying to leave the boring law internship.

Carrie is still mulling over her choices (she ends up saying yes to the Interview internship) when the Winter Ball rolls around. The dance becomes tense when Sebastian arrives with his new girlfriend, Donna LaDonna, and it seems that Carrie is not the only one still holding a flame. This causes Carrie to freak out at Sebastian and lead George back to his limo for some heavy petting.  Remember when I said that the fact George’s dad was a sleazy lawyer? This is where that fact comes in handy. It seems like the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. George is just as sleazy and piggish as his father, and Carrie, rightfully, breaks it off when he tries to take it too far with her. George hits the road back to Manhattan.

This is a decision that does not please Donna LaDonna, and since she’s the show’s resident mean girl, it’s apropos of her to pull some dastardly act for really dumb reasons. Donna, who has two eyes so therefore, can clearly see that Sebastian still has feelings for Carrie, blackmails Maggie into keeping Carrie and Sebastian away from each other or else she’ll let Maggie secret affair become common knowledge. I have to admit, it was really stupid on Maggie’s part to sleep with that cop in his car on school grounds. Then again, this show never claimed that Maggie was the brightest bulb of the bunch.

Maggie confides to Carrie about her secret and LaDonna’s poor attempts at blackmail, and Carrie takes the news as easily as if someone was talking to her about the weather. I guess it’s understandable considering she’s sort of, maybe, kind of, hiding the fact that Walt doesn’t really like girls in a romantic way, so she can’t really judge Maggie.

I also want to touch upon Dorrit and Tom’s interactions this episode. It’s really great to delve deeper into Dorrit’s thoughts and feelings to discover the reasons why she acts the way she does.  Her development makes me love her character even more so than I do already.  Unfortunately still no Morrissey cameo.

This episode felt like a boiling pot. Things are started to bubble and bubble in Carrie’s little world, and if next week’s promo is any indication, that pot is about to boil over.

Rating: 6/10
