The Carrie Diaries episode 6 ‘Endgame’ dealt with Thanksgiving, and it was a disaster for everyone involved. It’s the first Thanksgiving since the death of Carrie and Dorrit’s mother, and Carrie takes it upon herself to try to recreate her mother’s signature Thanksgiving Day meal. I think I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth repeating, my favorite thing about this series (besides Dorrit and Tom) is Carrie’s journey with trying to deal with her mother’s death and growing up through the process. There’s something completely realistic about Carrie’s actions and words as she tries to make the perfect Thanksgiving Day. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Carrie Bradshaw holiday if everything didn’t go wrong. Not only does Carrie have to deal with the turkey from hell, but her UES boyfriend shows up and Carrie has to play perfect “New York Carrie” instead of dumpy “Connecticut Carrie” (I don’t understand either). Things end up disastrously for Carrie and company, but nothing says ‘Happy Thanksgiving Day’ quite like a power outage and oven explosion; that sounds like regular Thanksgiving dinner around my household. It was a bonus for me to have an episode filled with Dorrit, especially since she was absent from last week’s episode. While the show mostly deals with Carrie’s issues with her mother’s death, it’s nice to be reminded that Dorrit is also having difficulty dealing with her mother’s death. Instead of trying to fix things like Carrie, Dorrit hilariously tried (and succeeded) to sabotage all of Carrie’s dinner plans. These were the kind of mischievous pranks that I wished Dorrit would have pulled during the Halloween episode, but better late than never. I only wish that there was a Morrissey cameo.
As Carrie’s dinner plans go up in smoke, Maggie’s Thanksgiving freezes over. Now that she and Walt are back together, she decides to spend the holiday with Walt’s family. While I joked in my last review about the mini WASP crew in “Dangerous Territory,” Walt’s family truly was the epitome of WASP. Maggie is from different walks of life compared to Walt, and it became painfully obvious when she tried (and failed) to kid around with Walt’s family. The dinner with Walt’s family also raised the topic of college for Maggie. She had never thought of college before, but it seems like now it’s becoming a major issue for her. It’s refreshing to see someone struggle with higher education, especially someone like Maggie who usually seems to have everything under control on the surface, despite what her actual life is really like. I predict to see a major breakdown coming from Maggie (at least that’s what I hope).
This episode made me feel bad for Sebastian Kydd, which I never thought I would say. Despite what I may feel about the character, it’s awful that a kid should spend Thanksgiving alone while their mother traipses around the world. I both commend and hate the show’s writers for making me feel sad over Kydd’s situation. Fortunately, he gets to spend the holiday with Carrie and her family, which’ll no doubt add to Carrie’s love life confusion. Maggie shows up too and a day that started out as a total disaster ended up being rather heartening and made me wish that it was the holiday season all over again.
