TV Review: MTV’s ‘Buckwild’

buckwild

The new MTV show, Buckwild, kicked off last Thursday at 10pm, replacing the popular show, “Jersey Shore” that had recently ended its run. Coincidently, in my opinion, the show is kind of like Jersey Shore, except that the cast is from the South. The cast members go to the club, drink, and there are hookups.  I watched the first episode, and I liked it a lot.

Buckwild is about ten friends living in West Virginia. They don’t have much, but they make a lot of fun out of the resources they’re given. A few of the cast members went “muddin’.” They rode a truck into a puddle of mud and got dirty, but they had to get help from a friend when the truck ended up getting stuck in the mud. I don’t see how that would be fun, but it was to them.

One of the boys on the show, Shain, is very funny. He’s so country and has the thickest southern accent. He was narrating most of the episode, and talking about his neighborhood and life. He works by picking up people’s garbage, and in his words, he just has to “holler” when he needs something, since all his family members live near him.

Romance sparked early on in the first episode. Shain and another boy, Tyler (who is the best-looking one) both like a girl named Cara. Tyler tells Shain that he likes her, and Shain tells him he’s okay with it, but to the camera, Shain said that he liked her. Tyler and Cara end up getting together and even hooked up.

The funniest part of the episode to me was when the cast members all had a party, even though the girls who lived in the house had already gotten complaints for noise from their neighbors. During the party, one neighbor went to the house to tell them to keep the noise down. She had on some bright colored clothing, and her hair was bright red. One of the girls at the party called her Willy Wonka. Another girl got into a confrontation with the neighbor, but she was drunk. They were going back and forth, until the drunken girl pushed the neighbor, and the neighbor fell on the ground. The police ended up being notified, and the girl and her roommates got evicted.

The argument they were having was so funny though, because the neighbor was acting very over the top and ghetto. I think she was showing off for the cameras. The boys helped the girls move into their new house, and Shain told them that they needed a pool. So he got a dump truck from one of his friends, and he and his friends put down a plastic covering in the dump truck and taped it down on the sides. They then filled it up with water and everyone was jumping from the roof of the girl’s new house and into the dump truck. It looked like so much fun.  I think the show teaches viewers that you don’t have to have a lot to be happy. I also see why the show is called Buckwild, because the way the kids on the show choose to have fun is truly, buckwild.

Buckwild airs Thursday nights at 10/9c on MTV.
