The first thing on people’s minds is: “are they actors, or is this legit?”
In all honesty, I thought they were fantastic actors. The crew finds it insulting that viewers think they are actors. They claim the people who say that they are actors are jealous people and hate that they went from the Amish onto the big screen.
They claim they did the show for the whole experience, and to educate people about the Amish; not for the money and not for the fame.
But there has got to be a method behind the viewer’s suspicion.
There are pictures and articles online of Jeremiah in English clothing. He claims that he broke away from the Amish community years ago, but will always consider himself Amish. Although he might not dress the part, it is part of who he is. People have heard the news that he was abusive and was arrested in 2005 for domestic violence. The court declared him innocent. He was married to a woman and had children with her. He currently, in the state he is in, sees his children once a month. He regrets that he didn’t pay child support in the past, but currently is.

Sabrina is a member of the Mennonite community, which means she can drive cars and use electricity in modern necessities. However, there were pictures exposed of her wedding in 2009. She claims that there was no dancing or alcohol at the wedding, and is currently in the process of divorcing him. There were also pictures of her on Twitter with blonde highlights, which viewers suspected are not part of the culture. She says it was “from the sun” and denies ever coloring her hair.
There were also pictures exposed of Rebecca in a bikini from 2010. She claims this is the first time she is seeing this photo, but remembers that she wore the bathing suit because she “felt like it.” She hopes though, that none of her family members see that photo of her.
Kate was arrested in Florida and given a DUI. She is currently in the process of taking classes and being done with the whole situation. People also saw a headshot of Kate on a modeling website. She claims it was from years ago when she was working in a restaurant and her boss insisted she become a model. She then took a decent picture of herself and entered the picture into a contest for a chance to win a modeling contract.
Abe was arrested for underage drinking at the age of 18. His parents never knew about his arrest until now.

Apparently, Abe and Rebecca knew each other for a while because they went to the same church; the relationship between the two didn’t just fall from the sky. However, a picture from 2010 reveals the couple together in a vehicle with Rebecca’s baby daughter. The couple gets all defensive and does not want to talk about the baby girl. Rebecca claims she wants to protect her daughter and her identity and Abe does not want to discuss anything that doesn’t have to do with the actual television program.
The crew disrespects host, Michelle Beadle, and claims that she “isn’t doing her homework” and that’s why she is asking them personal questions. On her defense, the crew neglects to answer half of her questions because they are “personal.” But, isn’t that the point of this “Shunning Truth” special?
This was probably one of the most interesting shows listed in the TV Guide. In today’s society, we don’t know much about the culture beyond our own. It is official that these young adults are legit Amish citizens and are NOT actors. We might still have our suspicious wonders and questions about who these people really are, but perhaps one day the crew will come clean.
I must admit, I enjoyed watching this show every Sunday at 10PM. I think the TLC should do justice and create another series of ‘Breaking Amish’, but with a different religion. But, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
