The three-night series finale of The Fosters was certainly a memorable one! There’s no drama like a destination wedding type of drama, am I right? The first of the three episodes begins in the backyard of that wonderful Fosters’ home, celebrating the graduations of many successful Adams-Foster kids and a particular engagement. The show begins by telling us what the core of this finale will be another glimpse into the Brandon and Callie relationship and exploring if, after all these years, there are feelings lingering. Cue the eye rolling, as this is a tried and tired narrative of the series and the fact that it wants to end on this storyline is really a disappointment for such a great show.
“Meet The Fosters” was definitely an apt title for this episode that moved five years into the future, reintroducing us to what the Fosters family has been up to, job offers from judges and tech companies and Lena’s foray into politics are some pretty impressive changes for the family. Finally, we get to know Eliza in this episode, we hear the story of how she and Brandon met and we get some pretty adorable flashbacks of the moments that led them to fall in love.
In the second episode of the finale, “Turks and Caicos,” we get to see the family having a little more fun amidst the drama, lots of drinks at hand and, yes, even a skinny-dipping scene. The major drama on this night-before-the-wedding revolves around the tension between the Fosters family and Eliza’s parents. Eliza’s father wants Brandon to sign a prenup, that revelation definitely throws him off-balance a bit. And, of course, being the Brandon we all know, he confides these feelings and doubts to Callie, giving the audience more reason to question whether Brandon will end up getting married the next day or not. We also experience some more of the tension between the moms and Eliza’s parents, their differences on everything from politics to understanding fostering and adoption. They even want to keep the moms from marrying the couple; will a wedding even take place?
The perfect Fosters finale ties up these issues the way it does best, lots of emotions and so many flashbacks in “Where the Heart is.” Brandon and Callie agree that they made the right choice in choosing the family instead of each other, Eliza stands up to her parents, and the moms get to marry the happy couple! They have the perfect beach wedding and we get a good ol’ dose of nostalgia with scenes of the family and all that they’ve been through the last couple of years, reminding us that their strength is in each other. A flash-forward to an empty Fosters house, that beautiful house, is a pretty perfect way to end the show. The family has sold their home. They’re moving because Lena is making a run for state assembly. Callie and Mariana, Jude and Brandon will all be in L.A. It’s an end to one chapter and the beginning of another extraordinary one for the family.
