The Joker has finally arrived on Gotham! After seasons of watching Jerome lay the groundwork for the Clown Prince of Crime, the true villain has come to the party. No one wants to say “I told you so,” but all of the Reddit/Twitter/Tumblr rumors came true. Once Jeremiah came into the picture, all of the boards and feeds lit up with speculation that the hidden brother would assume the title after Jerome met an untimely end. Now that Jerome got killed and Jeremiah got infected, we can finally witness The Joker storyline truly begin in Gotham City. And if we’re being direct, patience was starting to wear thin.
Jerome’s capitalized on his plan of getting Jeremiah out of hiding in true Joker style. The public spectacle, the carnival minions, and the blimp with the laughing gas are all iconic Joker tropes. For all you movie buffs out there, simply look to Tim Burton’s Batman to see the laughing gas plan in action. If the gas had infected the people of Gotham City, the entire population would’ve suffered and died with a smile on their faces. Say what you will about Oswald’s villainy, but if even a crime boss like The Penguin knew the gas was too evil and dangerous, then you knew this plan was going to be devastating. Jerome was hitting his stride with supervillain-like schemes.
Penguin saving the day was still a head-scratcher. Out of all the characters on Gotham, he came from nowhere to side with the good guys (in only one moment) to stop the gas from being released. He’s still neutral/evil, but that act of self-preservation was an interesting change for the character. Without his help, James and Harvey would’ve never been able to stop the villains, prevent the gas, and kill Jerome. Sure, the GCPD Commissioner, a priest, a mother, a singer and plenty of others were killed in the process, but he did good in the end.
Do you think Jerome knew he was going to die? He had every opportunity to save himself from being killed at the music festival, but he refused to take James’ hand and instead opted to fall from the building. When he told James the same speech we heard in the second season of Gotham, his words seemed like a fitting tie for Jeremiah to be transformed. However, his words did beg the question of whether he knew it was going to happen. Did he plan to rule Gotham City with his insane brother after infecting him? Or was he ready to pass on the torch, knowing he was going to die?
And now that Jeremiah is infected, will he assume the title of The Joker now, or will it be a slow buildup? In the original story, “The Joker” fell into a pit of chemicals and it turned him into the crazed criminal – the gas is Gotham’s way of connecting that story. We’ll have to wait and see if he slaps on the face paint, purple suit and iconic laugh in the next few episodes. Hopefully we don’t have to wait any longer for his presence.
Bruce also inched his way closer to becoming his future persona. We saw Alfred gift Bruce his first ever Batmobile for his birthday! Come on, a bulletproof car? Alfred knew what the boy billionaire had planned for that vehicle in the future when he gets himself into trouble. We shouldn’t be surprised if by the end of the season Bruce creates the mock-up for his first ever Batsuit. He seems to be progressing pretty quickly to the role of the Dark Knight now more than ever.
Barbara is going to regret pushing Tabitha aside and kicking her out of Gotham City. This whole situation with ruling the League of Shadows had been too suspicious from the get-go. And now with the painting of her likeness involved, there is something amiss going on in that organization. This has to be a test by Ra’s al Ghul, right? When the men came to take Tabitha away and mentioned their dead leader’s name, that revelation couldn’t have been a coincidence. He has to be alive, either through the Lazarus Pit, or he’s been alive all this time. As much as I love the character of Barbara, her potentially being hundreds of years old, or the reincarnated spirit of someone Ra’s knew, seems far-fetched.
“That’s Entertainment” was a fitting end for the Jerome storyline. This crazed character captivated our screens for three seasons now, and he was a beloved character we thought was going to be The Joker. However, if his end means that the true villain will be joining the city, we’ll gladly say goodbye. From this point on, Bruce’s true enemy has arrived and his evil on Gotham City has only just begun.
