★★★★ Love. That is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Adele’s new album, 21. I love this album so much. With 21, Adele once again reels you in with her voice and makes you feel. 21 is pure magic.
Adele manages to weave several genres of music within this album, more so than she did with her debut album, 19. I detected hints of pop, rock, blues, jazz and country throughout the album. The first single of the album, Rolling in the Deep, is stomp-y, bluesy piece. It’s full of soul and power. The 22 year old singer knows how to hit all the high notes, but doesn’t overdo it and try to hit the next 16 imaginary high notes. (Yeah, I’m talking about you, Ms. Aguliera.)
The album is full of great tracks. Rumor Has It is energetic and sassy, another bluesy piece but with high energy. Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic) produced this track for her. He also produced Turning Tables, a slow and lovely song that makes you appreciate Adele’s vocal versatility. As well, she mixes old school with new school; you really see this in He Won’t Go. My other favorite tracks from the album are Someone Like You, Set Fire to the Rain, and the jazzy cover of The Cure’s Lovesong.
The album is about love and its regrets. It’s about the why’s and what if’s. It speaks to anyone who has fallen in love or felt the aftereffects of heartbreak. A wise person once told me that the best love songs are the ones that are specific enough that you know artist has really felt that way before, but not too specific that you can’t relate to it at all. (Yeah, I’m talking about you, Miss Swift.) Adele manages to give the perfect balance of specificity to her music. I sing along to her, feeling the same emotions she has.
Overall, 21 is a stunning album. It’s full of passion and just beautiful music. It’s not over-embellished and it isn’t completely raw. It’s not depressing or sad, but uplifting and fun at time. Finally, it’s one of those rare pop albums, the ones that aren’t identifiable with a certain decade of time, but transcends to any period of time. With 21, Adele has created a timeless collection of music.
