Marvel has turned nearly everything they touch into gold. Their success rate with movies and shows has been outstanding over the past decade plus. Unfortunately, there is finally a major blemish to add and that blemish is called Inhumans. Watching paint dry is probably more interesting and exciting than attempting to get through the two-episode premiere.
The show is about a race of genetically altered human species that must save their race from outside dangers. That’s about as much that’s clear about this show. This group of Inhmans is led by King Black Bolt (Anson Mount) and his wife, the queen, Medusa (Serinda Swan). Early on, it’s revealed that Bolt is a mute and Medusa does the talking for him. At the center of the budding turmoil is Bolt’s brother, Maximus (Iwan Rheon), who is contemplating some bad things in a revolt against his brother. Other notable characters are Auran (Sonya Balmores), a commander, Karnak (Ken Leung), Bolt’s advisor, Triton (Mike Moh), Bolt’s cousin, Gorgon (Eme Ikwuakor), Bolt’s brother, and the leader of the Attilan’s military, Medusa’s sister, Crystal (Isabell Cornish). Last, but not least, is Crystal’s teleporting giant beast Bulldog, Lockjaw. These are the main culprits in this show and as you can see most of them revolve around Bolt. For a man of no words, he’s kind of a big deal.
Back to what makes this show a complete waste of time. For two hours (TV time), there is nothing compelling that would warrant holding your attention. This show has a serious lack of identity. It looks like it could be a cheap rip-off of Star Trek with a pinch of Guardians of the Galaxy. It tries to project the style of Star Trek, but fails due to the lack of any characters worth being invested in. As different as these characters seem to appear, they lack any distinguishing appeal. The closest one to standing out is Medusa, whose superpower is her long ginger hair that kicks-ass, literally.
This show lacks any sort of Marvel feel. Aside from the characters missing the mark, it’s the slow pacing that separates it from other Marvel favorites. These two combined premiere episodes could have been cut in half and still the same plot message would be conveyed. Maybe that’s why they need to reinforce that it’s a Marvel property by adding “Marvel’s” Inhumans to the title?
There was an awkward setting change where some of the Inhumans invade Hawaii of all places. The few rare entertaining moments that occur in the show happen when Bolt attempts to adjust to the culture on earth. He even ends up getting himself a nice suit. That entire sequence where he basically commits theft and walks out of the store with a brand new unpaid suit and ends up arrested at the police station actually managed to get a few chuckles out of me. Maybe more awkward and absurd moments would give this show a semblance of entertainment that it sorely lacks.
Overall, Marvel’s Inhumans is so bland and boring that it gives you no reason to continue watching after twenty minutes, and that’s assuming you stayed that long. Bad plot. Dull characters. Weak villain. The acting isn’t good (lots of overacting). There’s a major lack of any kind of drama and entertainment. I can go on about why this show doesn’t deserve another chance. If those were the primed episodes that they wanted to lure viewers with, then they completely blew it. There is a reason it got a Friday night slot, because NO ONE watches TV on Friday nights! I don’t think we will get the chance to see the ultimate fate of the Inhumans before this show dies out and gets the plug pulled.
