This week’s episode of Midnight, Texas, titled “Last Temptation of Midnight,” felt like the tipping point for the series and a vast improvement from last week’s angel-induced mess – and we aren’t just saying that because this week’s big bad is basically a male version of Arya Stark and all her face-stealing glory.
Since we don’t have a name for our villain, we are just going to keep rolling with the Game of Thrones references and call him the Faceless Man; he is driving towards Midnight with a goal of starting the apocalypse, while stealing some faces on the side. Of course, he doesn’t arrive at Midnight until the end of the episode when he happens to pick up Manfred, who’s running from some demons of his own, but we’ll get to that later.
The Midnighters are all starting to lose their minds as their problems start to brew and bubble over. Fiji is getting sick and tired of the demon (who the Faceless Man wants to raise) saying her name over and over again, Olivia and Lemuel are having some serious relationship issues, what between Olivia’s comments about her eventually leaving him (because she doesn’t want to go vamp) and Lemuel’s ravaging hunger, Rev’s unusual desire for rare steaks and the demon whispering dark thoughts to the sad residents of Midnight like Creek.
While Manfred is on his soul searching drive through the desert, having flashbacks of his childhood with his grandmother and realizing his true purpose to save Midnight, the heart of the episode lies with Olivia and Lemuel’s relationship. When we were first introduced to the vampire and assassin duo we knew that there were going to be problems considering Olivia has some serious trust issues and there’s always the looming question of whether or not the human in the relationship will choose to live and die or become immortal.
When things boil over, their fight gets extreme when Lem attacks Olivia and tries to turn her. She gets royally pissed off and is triggered beyond belief because of her mysterious and traumatic past. We don’t know what happens after the fight between the two after Manfred splashes the antidote in his face. The way things are looking though, things probably aren’t going to be the same for Olivia and Lem anymore.
On a happier note, Manfred is back home and kind of reunited with Creek. But Wednesday night’s episode is bringing a sandstorm and a now resurrected demon to town, so it still looks like poor Midnight just can’t get a break and we hope that it doesn’t because, finally, the show is starting to get good.
