The Guest Book’s “Story Five” was different than any of the other stories previously on on the show. Unlike the other episodes, the story wasn’t told through the guest book, but a retelling from Blake (Tommy Dewey) as he sat in a Mexican cantina.
Blake was recently caught in a relationship with a woman who sold drugs for the Colombian cartel. To save himself from jail, he decides to testify against the cartel, but by doing that, he gets a target put on his back. He is then put in federal custody and watched over by Trina (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) at Froggy Cottage.
When getting the keys, Blake meets Tickles and he talks her into going to his apartment to get a briefcase full of money he stole from the cartel so they can ditch Trina and run away together. Once Tickles brings him the money, Blake tries to knock Trina out to escape.
Instead, they bond over the love for poetry as she was writing in the guest book. In a span of thirty seconds they make love, Blake handcuffs Trina to a bedpost, she gets free, puts a gun to Blake, he hits her with a wrench, Trina then wakes up and searches for him, Tickles announces she doesn’t know where Blake went, Tickles gets handcuffed to a pole, and when Trina stops for gas, she finds Blake in the trunk and they kiss.
Confused right? Well, Blake reveals that he threw that twist in there because “everyone loves a twist” and honestly, they are very rare in comedies because it’s hard to execute properly. However, The Guest Book did a great job with the twist and especially the second one.
The second twist comes when Blake recalls what really happened. He says that after Trina puts a gun to him she says she wants to run away together. They then start talking in rhymes along with a happy upbeat tune that is very cheeky. You then think it’s a happy story and that the two end up together in Mexico, but that’s the second twist.
Blake reveals a second time to the bartender that he ended up ditching her at the gas station, taking both the money and Trina’s patrol car. What he didn’t realize was that the car could be traced and Trina, along with the chief her father, shows up at the cantina to take him back to the U.S. to testify.
“Story Five” was definitely slow to start and didn’t really gain my attention until the first twist was revealed. That was the turning point in the episode and made it stand out among the previous ones. The Guest Book is definitely pushing the weird and out-there envelope that makes viewers question what is even going on, and after the twist in “Story Five,” viewers will be wondering if the story they’re watching is even the characters’ reality.
