Wynonna Earp 2×01 Review: “Steel Bars and Stone Walls”

Season 2 starts with a bang! I mean that literally since the episode starts with the Earp team killing a new type of demon. Glad that the show is expanding beyond demons that simply look human. In fact it looks like more creatures will be on the horizon.

I wanted to start with the few small issues that messed with the premiere. The biggest one being the neglect of season one’s ending where Waverly shoots a gun at the screen and the only person in front of her was Wynonna. The episode completely goes over that fact, even though it starts by reminding us that it happened. The second issue is Black Badge. It doesn’t make sense that they’d not check Dolls’ living quarters and clear out any important information. That’s seriously lacking on their part. Dolls somehow got a phone from them even though he’s their prisoner. Also, the soul-sucking demon had a pretty easy time breaking out after smelling a bit of blood, but then it couldn’t get through a regular door. It’s little things like this that draw away from the overall awesome episode, but enough negative.

Wynonna Earp continues to be one of the best parts of the show. Not only is she strong, but she’s also funny. Watching her be awkward and jealous towards Eliza made me laugh. It’s surprising how someone so strong could fold under a little emotional pressure. More importantly, the crying scene was a short but good one that reveals that Wynonna didn’t find pleasure in killing Willow. It’s something that she’s been trying to avoid, and she’ll have to carry that with her. She also has to deal with her love interest now on the run.

Another character that stole the show and has her own problems to worry about is Waverly. Her relationship with Haught is still burning strong, but her powers/blood and new found status might slowly affect that. Although, it’s kind of shocking that Haught was upset that she’s not part of Black Badge even though they’re not good people. More importantly, Waverly might not be all good. There’s something dark inside her and what’s worrying is that she seems to like it. She has a big smile on her face every time those eyes go black, and it happened a lot this episode. Not to mention that the soul sucking demon backed down from her, so she may have control over other demons and monsters. It’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds and how everyone deals with her.

Eliza was another person that would’ve had to deal with her powers, but she’s dead. It’s unfortunate because her and Wynonna played well off of each other. She also revealed that she’s like Dolls, and she says that they were made. It’s unclear what they are but they were going to figure that out. I feel like they should’ve kept her alive for a couple more episodes.

As for Dolls, it’ll be interesting to see where his story goes. He doesn’t have his medicine so he’s likely to lose control. Hopefully we’ll get to see what he is. I’m hoping it’s a werewolf. It’s hard to worry about Black Badge being after him since they’re semi-capable at doing their jobs, but they’re still something to look out for especially Moody.

Doc continues to be his lovable self. Unfortunately, he has to get a new hat, but it sure was funny to see him reach for it even though it wasn’t there. Not to mention that he was able to save Dolls with dynamite. Although, that helped release some creature, but we’ll worry about that another time. Doc is also hiding whatever Dolls told him. It must be a secret worth keeping.

Lastly, there were three small jokes I had to mention. The first one was when Haught tells Waverly she has a bad British accent, which works if you know that Dominique Provost-Chalkley is actually British. The other joke is when Waverly hits the geek over the head, but he doesn’t get knocked out. Poor guy. Also, he was forced to sign in blood even though he works for Black Badge.
