Dark Matter is back with a two-episode premiere for our enjoyment. Let’s talk about “Being Better Is So Much Harder” first. As seen on last season’s finale, EOS-7 started to explode, and now some last minute decisions lead the team to be separated.
Arguably the most interesting of the groups were Five, Truffault and The Android. The way they managed to easily take down the Ferrous Corp soldiers was awesome, and it inspires strong females. The Android also came through and blew up the enemy with their own ship. It shows how the team is able to come up with game winning plans on the fly.
Another great touchstone of this episode were the interactions between Two and Six. Neither of them could imagine Ryo blowing up EOS-7, but he did. They also couldn’t imagine him killing Nyx since the two of them had feelings for each other. Two’s decision to save Six was admirable since she’s the captain and was putting one of her crew before herself. This decision even got her a chance to say goodbye to Nyx in her own way. Their interaction heavily implied that Two had feelings for Nyx. Too bad they won’t get to explore it.
Three was stuck in a facility with Anderson and got attacked by a security drone. The moment when they were quiet and the drone flew away was a little hard to believe, but it’s something that could be looked past. It was nice that Anderson must’ve seen something in Three that led him not to turn Three into the Galactic Authority.
Meanwhile, Ryo/Four has assigned Teku as his right hand. It’s unclear how this will change things moving forward, but we do know that Misaki is not a fan of him. She made this very clear in the second episode when she told Teku about the boy she killed, which was clearly a threat.
Misaki might also be in high water with Ryo since he found out that she killed Nyx. What was surprising is that she instantly owned up to it and had no shame in her choice. Misaki stands by her beliefs, and she knows Ryo still has a soft spot for his crew even if he doesn’t always show it. Misaki might be a person that Ryo should look out for in the future.
On the subject of Ryo, he’s clearly different from the Four we used to know. This whole episode he was willing to go against his scientist’s advice and even sacrifice lives for his own plan. On top of that, he put the scientist below him since he knew that his body was simply a clone. Ryo is coldblooded and he may not be redeemable, which doesn’t help him since Two is out for blood.
It’s good that the show directly addressed that not everyone was cool with killing Ryo. He use to be their family, so at least one person had to be against him being killed. The plan was simply to get the blink drive, which they acquired, but the real question is what the crew will do next. Do they go after their friend and try to kill him or do they come up with another plan of action?

Lastly, Five isn’t looking too good. She’s being trapped in her memories and if the crew doesn’t do something then that could happen permanently. The Android found a solution, but it could cost Five all of her memories and would be rebooted, which doesn’t help her case now that she found out that she has a sister. Not to mention that her friend unknowingly sent her on an entirely different path. She could’ve gone to college and ran a shop. I’d like to see that affect her in some way because it’s a big deal. That guy wasn’t bad at all.
