Shadowhunters is back and better than before. With Valentine seemingly out of the way, a new villain rises to take his place. A greater demon named Azazel (aka a prince of hell) has arrived looking for The Mortal Cup and he’s not someone to go against. In this episode alone, he’s able to take down both Shadowhunters and Mundanes with the wave of a hand. He took down our main characters with ease, and he did something to both Magnus and Valentine. It’s unclear what that is, but based on the end of the episode it looks like Magnus might begin to hate himself. Hopefully the show will continue to display how much of a foe Azazel can be.
The main reason for finding Azazel was because they thought he had Izzy. Little did they know that she was even near him because she’s going through withdrawal. The scene with her on the bed trying to sweat it out was hard to watch. It showed how much addiction can affect someone’s life, even a Shadowhunter. Izzy couldn’t even stay strong and she went out to find a bite, which led her first to Raphael. Glad he didn’t give in this time and said he wouldn’t enable her. That’s better than what he did the first half of the season. Izzy’s next attempt led her to Azazel, but luckily she was saved by Sebastian.
Sebastian seems good-hearted. He wants to help Izzy get over her addiction like he said he would, but there’s something off about him. He was shown burning himself and didn’t even seem to flinch. Is his addiction pain? Does his action stem from how his mother use to show him love? It’s not clear, but he’s someone that she should look out for. Not to mention he said he went rogue from the London Institute, which might be a sign that there’s more going on.
Since I brought up vampires, it’d probably be best to move on to Simon. He can walk in the sun now! The effects of the last episode haven’t worn off and Simon can officially walk in the sun, but as we know Simon’s life never turns out great. Despite this new ability he doesn’t know if it’ll last forever, which makes his decision to enroll in college a bit too rash. Simon is also bad at keeping secrets and a bunch of Downworlders in The Hunter’s Moon know that he can do this, including Maia. This secret eventually gets to Raphael who wants to know how Simon did it. He didn’t tell, but it’s assumed that Raphael will do his best to find out.
Speaking of secrets, Jace just revealed his biggest one. He was trying to hold off on telling Clary that they weren’t related because he didn’t want to ruin what Simon and Clary have together. Turns out it doesn’t matter, which I’m happy about. Once Clary found out, she said it wouldn’t change anything about her relationship with Simon, and I’m hoping that’s true. A complete switch from Simon to Jace would feel forced. It’s unclear how this will affect the former siblings, but it’ll definitely change something.
Also, Jace has awakened some power. Earlier on Alec said that Jace must have some sort of power from the angel blood, and it turns out that Jace can activate runes without his stele. Maybe he can learn how to use this power, and possibly combine it with Clary’s, even though her power wasn’t working for some reason.
Lastly, Luke is trying to deal with a new partner and an angry pack. His partner is very suspicious of his actions and Luke doesn’t help to make her feel at ease. As for his pack, he’s handling things in his own way, but it always seems like he puts the pack second. It feels like this is being felt by his members and it may cost him his title if he doesn’t wise up.
