In tonight’s episode “Progeny,” Michael (Wentworth Miller) must return to the States in hopes of saving his beloved wife Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son from Poseidon (Mark Feuerstein). This race against time brought forth another thrilling installment as Prison Break begins to come to a close.
POSITIVES
Mind Games
A key facet that made season two of Prison Break so great was the inclusion of Agent Mahone, who could go toe to toe mentally with Michael. In tonight’s episod,e we again see that same formula in play between Michael and Poseidon. From the random letter being sent to Bagwell, to Sucre (Amaury Nolasco) outsmarting the hit men and even having C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar) working with the Scofield brothers again all worked out perfectly. Although it was disappointing to potentially see the last of C-Note and Sucre for this season.
Bagwell has a Son?
Even with a cliffhanger ending, the biggest take away from tonight’s episode is the reveal that Whip (Augustus Prew) is Bagwell’s (Robert Knepper) son. I truly did not see this one coming at all. Though it was a bit complicated to understand upon first viewing, the bait and switch of having us believe Bagwell would kill Whip worked out great. Instead it was for Bagwell to come to the realization he had a son all along. Another note worth mentioning was the superb acting done by Knepper, who in that scene with Prew stole the show.
Hit men with a conscious

Although the hit men have not been a highlight this season, in tonight’s episode, they did touch back on the “presumed” last words from Agent Kellerman (Paul Adelstein). Where Kellerman stated that the truth will eventually kill the lie. Now with Poseidon clearly proving that his intentions are more personal than benevolent, we see the hit men beginning to doubt him, which I enjoyed.
Whose blood is it?
Clearly the blood is not Michael’s nor of Michael Jr. If anything, it’s that of the female hit man working for Poseidon, which begs the question of who killed her? My money is that it’s her partner or wait for it… Kellerman. I know it’s a long shot, but I still believe the man is alive. But if not Kellerman or her partner, the only other reasonable guess would be Lincoln (Dominic Purcell). Chances are Lincoln is a little too wounded to make that happen.

While I believe Lincoln will survive having been shot by Abruzzi Jr., it does bring into question his role for the finale. It would put Michael in quite the bind having to decide whether to stay at his brother’s side or continue his search for Sara. Assuming Michael does continue searching for Sarah, it would mean we would get a very Michael-centric finale with very little Lincoln.

Michael Jr.’s way too calm

Maybe I am judging too hard, but in last week’s episode, we saw Michael Jr. being picked up by Sarah’s neighbor. Only once she arrived home, she had a gun pointed at her by none other than one of Poseidon’s hit men. Michael Jr. was right there to see this, yet he is somehow completely unfazed. How does that happen?
Abruzzi’s son?
Again this is a small nitpick on my part, but while I did enjoy seeing the Abruzzi lineage continue via Abruzzi’s son, I still hate that the show killed Abruzzi (Peter Stormare) in season 2. Like how awesome would it have been if we saw Stormare pop up this season? It would have been incredible. Instead we get him back in the form of his son, which is just not the same.
CONCLUSION
Tonight’s episode quite frankly did great justice to its title “Progeny,” quite literally a story of fathers and sons. Now was the Bagwell Whip storyline sped up faster than we would have liked? Sure. However, with such a shortened season, beggars can’t be choosers. So instead of nitpicking on smaller details, I’m choosing to enjoy the resurgence of a show many, myself included, thought was dead in the water. Here’s hoping to an explosive ending next week.
