Ryse: Sons of Rome has already gone through its ups and downs. Once rumored to be in development hell, the former Xbox 360 Kinect exclusive has now made its official debut as an Xbox One exclusive launch title. It has also shed its Kinect oriented gameplay in favor of the “better with Kinect” approach. The game is developed by renowned game studio Crytek, responsible for the Far Cry and Crysis franchises.
The onstage E3 demo starts with the protagonist, general Marius Titus, storming the shores of a barbarian city. Gameplay is a mix of real time strategy and first person combat. You must command your troops to the top of the city in order to capture a catapult, all while hacking and slashing hordes of enemies on your own. Executions are available via quick time events and deliver a brutally satisfying finish to a tense fight. Troop instructions can be delivered manually or through Kinect. The new version of Kinect might also make it possible to incorporate gesture controls, but we’ll have to wait until the game creeps closer to release to see if that pans out.
The demo is definitely impressive so be sure to check out the video below. It’s powered by the latest version of Crytek’s CryEngine 3. Look for Ryse: Sons of Rome when it releases later this fall on Xbox One.
