Oh, the Golden Globes. Tonight, the Hollywood Foreign Press awarded their favorite films and TV shows of the past year at one of the industry’s most glamorous ceremonies.
It was a big night for Boyhood; Richard Linklater’s remarkable coming-of-age film took home Best Movie Drama, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. The Comedy/Musical film categories were a little more varied. Michael Keaton won Best Actor for Birdman, but The Grand Budapest Hotel nabbed the Best Comedy/Musical award.
As for TV, the HFPA followed tradition by awarding the newcomers and first-time nominees. Gina Rodriguez, from Jane the Virgin, gave an empowering and heartfelt speech when she accepted Best Actress in a TV Comedy award. Jeffrey Tambor won his first Golden Globe nomination ever. New series Transparent and The Affair both took home the top TV honors of the night. If anything, these great shows are no longer under the radar, so we can’t complain there.
It’s bittersweet that this was the last Golden Globes ceremony Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host. They ended their GG reign with hilarious jokes that also served as biting social commentary. Here’s to hoping that we see them at it again soon.
