There are some horrors most people are used to: jump scares in movies, the cost of health care, Kanye West’s political tweets, etc. But some things are not meant for the eyes of man and Paramount Pictures decided to tempt fate (more so than when they allowed a giant robot’s balls to be seen in theaters).
The first images of Sonic the Hedgehog’s live-action rendering for his upcoming movie produced by Paramount leaked online Monday night. According to Polygon, the images come from Hamagami/Carroll, Inc. and the company’s branding guide for the film. The images showcase Sonic with his trademark blue fur that’s noticeably lighter than his video game avatar. The white gloves he frequently sports while wagging his finger at lame villains have apparently melted into his skin, causing the white furry hands seen in the leaked images. It is slightly encouraging that Sonic has apparently signed a deal with Nike to sport some new sick kicks (suck on that, Lebron).

To be as fair as humanly possible, the design is….decent. It’s bright and friendly-enough for the obvious child audience the movie is going for. There are only two features that are a touch disturbing. First is the height of Sonic, usually a short spitfire meant to emphasize the David-and-Goliath play of his treks against bad guys. The movie rendering makes him look like the guy wearing the giant Sonic suit in the ads for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. And then there’s the eyes…..dear lord, those eyes. The bright jade-colored specs and black pupils of Sonic are distractingly large. Stare long enough and Sauron might reach out for your soul.
