Coming up on the heels of their North American press tour is a new single from British girl group Little Mix. “Hair,” a sassy track about saying good riddance to bag luggage, takes the girls’ sound in a different direction than previous bubble gum pop single “Black Magic.” Whereas “Black Magic” was all exuberant, B*Witched-esque fun reminiscent of their first album, “Hair” swings back to the more mature sound found on Salute. For instance, the “ping” noise doesn’t hide the lyric “He was just a dick and I knew it.” It’s a break up anthem for the ages, following in the spiritual pop footsteps of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Britney Spears’s “Stronger.”
This single is particularly relevant considering the questions the band had to endure about member Perrie Edwards’s recent break up with former One Direction member Zayn Malik during their press tour. It might have been written before the break up, but the choice of it as a new single sends a clear message about Edward’s (and the rest of the band’s) opinion about a future sans the former boy band member.
Even though they are so different, “Black Magic” and “Hair” are leading me to believe that the girls are going to have a lot to offer with their upcoming third album Get Weird. The album drops November 6, 2015.
