Irish rock band The Cranberries are set to release a stripped-down album entitled Something Else, coming to record stores, iTunes, and Spotify worldwide in late April. The album will feature pulled-back, acoustic versions of their iconic singles alongside three never-before-heard tracks.
One of the stand-out songs on Something Else is, of course, perhaps the Cranberries’ most well-loved and well-recognized ditties: the uniquely affecting “Linger.” The smash-hit 1993 single swept listeners off their feet, and earlier this week, the Cranberries released the Something Else edition of the song. Front-woman Dolores O’Riordan sparkles in the refreshed song, her eccentric and easily-lovable voice settling over a gorgeous accompaniment from the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Though nearly two and a half decades since its original release, “Linger” still hits hard in any arrangement, and O’Riordan’s pipes seem to have evolved wonderfully over the years.
This track may very well be the most important on the forthcoming album, as it’s the first song O’Riordan wrote once she’d joined the band and it was also the Cranberries’ first massive hit. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she stated: “‘Linger’ was the first song I wrote after joining the Cranberries. I was 18, and the youngest member of the band was 16 at the time. We never imagined it’d be such a big hit.”
Additionally, O’Riordan mentioned the timelessness and relevancy of “Linger” is something she hopes will continue onward, and that many future listeners will be able to connect with the “bittersweet love song.”
“It’s amazing to have a song hold up 25 years later,” she said. “I hope this acoustic version allows our fans to hear a Cranberries classic in a new way.”
