Yesterday the pop music canon was graced with another soon-to-be iconic breakup song. We’re talking something along the lines of Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” or any song Taylor Swift has pointedly sung in someone’s direction. British girl group Little Mix performed their newest single “Shout Out To My Ex” on UK X-Factor last night to heaps of praise and support from fans all over the world. A sassy girl power anthem like “Shout Out to My Ex” is the perfect way for the ladies to kick off their fourth album, Glory Days.
Opening with a badass solo from Perrie Edwards, it’s not hard to figure out that this song is aimed directly at former One Direction member Zayn Malik, who ended their engagement in the midst of reinventing himself as a solo artist. “It was horrible, the worst time in my life. A four year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that,” Edwards writes in the new Little Mix book. “Shout Out to My Ex” pulls no punches, and rightfully so. Within the first verse, Perrie sings, “I hope she’s getting better sex/Hope she ain’t fakin’ it like I did babe.” In case you doubted that this was about Zayn, she continues with, “Took four long years to call it quits/Forget that boy I’m over it.”
There’s no moping to be found here–”Shout Out to My Ex” is a fun, upbeat breakup song about recognizing someone’s impact on your life, but moving on anyway. It’s quite the positive message, but not without a few sick burns–just like all the best breakup songs before it.
