The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a unique music scene. Ranging from concerts to music themed experiences, there’s always something going on that’ll attract the music lover in you. One of those music events that’s unlike any other is California Academy of Sciences’ after hours series called NightLife.
NightLife is a weekly night time 21+ event held at the California Academy of Sciences that’s held every Thursday night. This is an after-hours ticketed event that requires a separate ticket for entry that’s different than a regular museum ticket. The night begins at 6pm and ends at 10pm and has a different theme of events each week. Museum visitors can view the regular events and exhibits that’s open to the general public. There are also bars (and many of them) that’s open just for NightLife events, where visitors can purchase drinks. There are also a variety of food options available in The Academy Cafe, The Terrace and The Academy Cafe Food Cart. Additionally, there are also activities that are unique to that particular week’s event.
Each week’s NightLife is unique and different every week. On October 13th, California Academy of Sciences ends their NightLife LIVE series, which features a variety of different LIVE acts and artists. This particular night had a number of different artists who displayed their crafty talents, such as Taurin Barrera, Danielle Rose Aspitz and Bo Huang. But there were also vendors, like Amoeba San Francisco, who were selling vinyl records, cassette tapes and other music goodies.
The outdoor area consisted of the LIVE music sets. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith opened the night and gave music lovers a taste of the experimental sonic palette which beautifully mixed the sounds of saxophones, clarinets and more which created colorful, infused sounds. entertaining and captivating experimental electro-pop.
The night ended with a bang as the headliner, Dan Deacon, got the crowd dancing to his experimental electro-infused sound. This electronic musician really knows how to get the crowd going. Incorporating lights, sound with a light hint of vocals, his sound is unlike other artists I’ve seen. As one who isn’t too keen with the electronic scene, I enjoyed his set a lot, especially how his music is also influenced by the pop scene. As he immediately started his set, it became clear that audience participation was highly encouraged and he even sold him with his comedic flair and personality that was easy to connect and gravitate to. He definitely got the crowd moving and grooving and started the Treasure Island Music Festival festivities on a high note.
