Pink Floyd has announced a new box-set that features long-sought after rarities and unissued material from the group’s first seven years of existence.
The Early Years: 1965-1972, a 27 disc set retailing at $550, will be released on November 11 through the band’s own Pink Floyd Records. The set features countless demos, unreleased tracks, rare singles and B-sides. Several items in the set have previously appeared on bootlegs in recordings of varying quality, but much .
Among the set’s contents are “Vegetable Man” and “Scream Thy Last Scream”, two tracks written and featuring the band’s original lead singer Syd Barrett that were at one point intended for a single release. A new remaster of the band’s 1972 album Obscured by Clouds is the only full-length studio album that will appear on the box. The album was last remastered in 2011 as part of a wider Pink Floyd reissue campaign that also included the box-set Discovery.
Also included are the A and B-sides of the band’s first five singles. While several of these tracks – such as the hit “See Emily Play” and the popular B-side “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” – have appeared on compilations before, other tracks like “Point Me at the Sky” are marking their first release on CD since a rare bonus disc included with the 1992 box set Shine On. The band’s earliest recordings from 1965, which had not officially issued until the limited release EP 1965: Their First Recordings in November 2015, are also included.
The set includes several DVD and Blu-Ray discs, the contents of which include concert recordings, television appearances (including newly restored segments from Top of the Pops and American Bandstand) and a new 5.1 Surround Sound version of the band’s 1972 concert film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. The set also includes two feature length films from French director Barbet Schroeder for which two of the band’s studio albums act as soundtracks. The films, More (1969) and La Valee (1971), are making their first ever American DVD release as part of the set.
The band has long been a favorite of bootleggers due the breadth of their rare and unreleased material and the popularity of that material with fans, particularly from the 1965-1972 period that the box set covers.
