British rock group The Stone Roses have released their first single in over two decades in advance of their summer concert dates in Europe and the United States.
“All for One” marks the first new music from the group since their 1994 second album Second Coming and their first single since 1995’s “Begging You”. The single premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 program this evening.
The release of the song comes on the heels of the band’s first concert dates since 2012, which will kick off with a four night run at Eithad Stadium in their hometown on Manchester, England. The band will also play concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 30, the T in the Park festival in Scotland on July 8 and Marlay Park in Dublin, Ireland on July 7. The band’s American and Irish dates will feature the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela as the opening act.
The Stone Roses’ much-celebrated debut self-titled 1989 album is considered a landmark of British guitar music and was a watershed release in the “Madchester” scene of dance and house-influenced rock guitar music. In turn, the album and the singles that surrounded it significantly influenced the subsequent Britpop movement. The band’s follow-up was considerably delayed due to legal issues and inter-band tension. Upon its release, Second Coming received mixed reviews and sales that did not match those of the debut. The band disbanded in 1996 after the departures of drummer Alan “Reni” Wren and guitarist John Squire. The band’s original lineup – Wren, Squire, lead singer Ian Brown and bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield – reunited for a successful tour in 2012, but did not release any new music at the time.
Earlier this year, the band was reported to be working on new music, but it has yet to be confirmed if a new full-length album will be released.
