A Kickstarter campaign has been started to help fund the completion and release of the final album by power pop group Game Theory.
The album, titled Supercalifragile, will be the band’s first since 1988’s Two Steps from the Middle Ages. Initial work on the album was underway in 2013, when lead singer and songwriter Scott Miller died on April 15 of that year. The project was revived last year by Miller’s wife Kristine Chambers, who recruited Ken Stringfellow of the Posies to produce the album. The album’s final mix will be overseen by Let’s Active frontman Mitch Easter, who produced four of Game Theory’s five albums.
Supercalifragile will feature contributions from Game Theory members Dave Gill, Nancy Becker, Jozef Becker, Suzi Ziegler, Donnette Thayer and Michael Quercio. It will also feature contributions from a host of other musicians, including Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Peter Buck of R.E.M., Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt and Scott Kannberg of Pavement.
According to the album’s Kickstarter page, Miller left behind several recordings intended for the album, as well recording notes that have aided in the completion of the project. The musicians involved with the project have been recording throughout the past year, including a session at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Miller formed Game Theory in 1982 and released five critically acclaimed albums – Blaze of Glory (1982), Real Nighttime (1985), The Big Shot Chronicles (1986), Lolita Nation (1987) and Two Steps from the Middle Ages (1988) – before disbanding in 1990. Miller was the band’s sole constant member through two major lineup changes. Following the band’s split, Miller formed another critically acclaimed rock group, The Loud Family, which lasted until 2006. He also released a book of music criticism, 2010’s Music: What Happened?, and worked as an engineer for the software firm MarkLogic.
Game Theory’s entire discography was out of print when Miller died, but beginning in 2014, it has been undergoing a re-release campaign by Omnivore Recordings. The label reissued the band’s fourth album Lolita Nation this past February on LP and CD. A biography on Miller by music writer Brett Milano, Don’t All Thank Me At Once: The Lost Pop Genius of Scott Miller was released last year.
