Listen to Joanna Newsom’s “Divers” Before Its Release

Joanna Newsom fans, rejoice! The singer, harpist, songwriter’s newest album Divers  is now streaming on NPR for the next few days leading up the official album release, and it sounds pretty great. Earlier this year, she released the music video collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson for her song “Sapokanikan.”

With a sound that combines the likeness of Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor, the album continues on with her distinct tone, heavy both with piano samplings and dissonant vocal arrangements. Playful and airy, as someone who is just on the cusp on being well versed with the artists music, despite some similar vocals, her music is unlike any that I’ve listened to. Divers is a happy mix between crooning ballads as well as songs that are more on the upbeat side, building to exciting crescendos.

To become acquainted with her work, check out her other albums Have One on Me, Ys, and 2004’s The Milk-Eyed Mender.

Let us know in the comments what you think of Newsom’s newest music. Which song will you be hitting the repeat button on immediately?

Divers will be released October 23rd via Drag City.
