Chancelor Bennett, better known by his stage name, Chance the Rapper, has finally delved into the world of film, with the Collin Tilley directed “Mr. Happy.” This film is a bit strange. The film centers on a young man by the name Victor. He’s been at odds with life, and he attempts suicide multiple times, but he hasn’t been able to get over the hump. One night he stumbles across a website that doesn’t bitch out. I would like to properly review this film but it would easily tread into spoiler territory. But I can keep it short and spoiler free.
Chance has shown he has the capability of being a great actor. He’s young and fresh, so obviously he has room for improvement. Regardless, he hits the emotional beats with his facial expressions perfectly, and I think that may be a benefit for the future. The story is strange, sweet, and sort-of predictable, but a good kind of predictable–and the cinematography is beautiful. At points it treads the trippy level but it complements the strangeness. I guess before I tell you to watch it below, I’ll say it’s worth the time spent watching it.
