Death Cab continues to ride a media storm after the departure of founding member Chris Walla and the anticipation of their forthcoming album, Kintsugi. The band embraces the philosophy of a new chapter, which is apparent in the lyrics and music video for “Black Sun,” the first single from Kinsugi.
“Oh, there is undoubtedly a line in the sand here,” says frontman Ben Gibbard. “The position we’re in – it’s a blessing and a curse – is that people feel very strongly about the period of this band in which they got into us. We’re fighting against people who say ‘Why can’t you make a record like the one I heard when I was 20 years old?’ And the answer is we can’t. We can just move forward, and create a new period.”
Gibbard’s explanation follows the theme of Kintsugi, which is a form of Japanese art in which you take a broken piece of art (usually pottery), and fix it with lacquer resin dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy is not hiding the broken piece of art, but embracing it as a part of the object’s history, as Gibbard explained in a recent appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”
Kintsugi will be released on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 on Atlantic Records.
