Kevin’s Tracks of the Week

Yesterday, as I browsed my usual list of hip-hop sites, I came across a pleasant surprise from Chance The Rapper. He covered the Arthur theme song with help from Wyclef Jean, Jesse Ware, Elle Varner, The O’my’s, and Donnie Trumpet, to name a few. The cover takes a different direction than the original. It’s given a more soulful rock-type instrumental while Chance dabbles with the lyrics. I like the direction and the emotion Chance expresses in his voice, considering the current state of Chicago.

I’m personally a huge fan of Sbtrkt, but his work with Sampha has been hit or miss with me, especially on his debut album. A week ago Subtrkt released a new song called “New Dorp New York,” featuring Ezra Koening of Vampire Weekend. Belarbi, a French music producer, has remixed the track to give it an interesting twist. Personally I’m a fan of the original, but I don’t mind this new mix at all. It’s giving it a modern take on 80’s and 90’s French electronica to give it more of a dance vibe.

The Weeknd has been one of my new favorite R&B artists of the past five years, that hasn’t abused his girlfriend or pissed on a white girl. This week he released his new single “Often,” which sounds like something out of Kissland, where it’s lyrically bland in terms of subject matter, but the mix of the instrumental and the synths gives it a very suave and sexy feel. I may have found something new to go in my sex playlist on spotify.

This may be old by almost two weeks, but I’d like to take a second and give a quick thought on a song that has been on a constant loop in my playlist. Diplo made a remix of Lorde’s hit single “Tennis Court.” His Andre Agassi is low on the dubstep but it has a very mellow electronic feel. Diplo is one of my favorite human beings and one of my favorite dubstep artists. Take a listen.
