Music News: Cher Lloyd Releases New Song “Dirty Love”

At the beginning of March, British pop artist Cher Lloyd announced “in an unprecedented decision” that she wanted her fans to premiere the tracks and pieces of the artwork from her sophomore album Sorry I’m Late on their social media platforms.  Following the release of latest single “Sirens” two weeks ago, Lloyd launched her fan experiment with “Dirty Love.” Fans were invited to tweet the hashtag #CherLloydDirtyLove to be the one to release the track. This honor went to twitter user @MelbournexCher, who linked the MTV.com premiere of the song on her Twitter account yesterday.

“Dirty Love” is a request for a significant other to be the real rather than polished version of themself—Cher sings about wanting someone a little rough around the edges, not an overly careful, halo-toting gentlemen. Being too perfect is boring, a sentiment which I could not agree with more. While the fast beat and perky sound harken back to her first album Sticks & Stones, the lyrics hint towards more mature themes like album predecessors “I Wish” and “Sirens.” These premiere contests are a cool fan experiment—in the ever-changing world of social media, it’s a new way to have fans feel like a part of the process.

Sorry I’m Late, named as an apology to fans for delaying the album while she made some serious career changes, is a definite departure from her previous music based on the three songs available. According to Lloyd’s website, newest single “Sirens” is about “letting down her barriers and being more vulnerable with her music,” a theme I think will be prevalent throughout the album. Sticks & Stones was very much a young pop album—much of it is quite bouncy and aimed at the younger set, specifically tracks like “Grow Up.” Based on the three tracks available from Sorry I’m Late, we can look forward to hearing more of Cher’s signature vocals and varied, with hints of more mature themes and different musical influences, like the vintage horn intro on first single “I Wish.” I’m looking forward to hearing what Cher has in store for us.
