Music review: Lil Wayne’s new album “Tha Carter IV”

6.5/10

On Sunday night at the VMA’s, Nicki Minaj called him “The Best Rapper Alive”, Lil Wayne himself has a song titled “Best Rapper Alive” which yes I had heard before, so I’m expecting “Tha Carter IV” to be mind-blowing, yet to me it was all hype and this album was rather underwhelming. It has good songs but the so-called best rapper alive fails to impress me.

First of all, Lil Wayne is talented within the rap category, the guy can spit verses, punchlines that will make anyone go “whoaa, repeat that part“, and beats that empower the song. Weezy is an artist that has no boundaries when it comes to rapping, he could do it over a beat or over a guitar and some drums and step over to the rock territory, even though I’m not a fan of his rock work I have to respect the guy for even daring to go all the way there. If you’re wondering, no, I was not a fan of “Rebirth” at all, meanwhile “Tha Carter III” to me is his best album to date, a complete package offering listeners a variety of songs where Weezy sounded like he really wanted to be on top of the Hip-Hop game.

In “Tha Carter IV” Lil Wayne seems uninterested, thinking of half-assed punchlines just for the purpose of rhyme, putting two metaphors together does not make anyone the best rapper alive, putting coherent verses together that rhyme and at least try to send a message, now that’s quality rap. The beats are average, nothing groundbreaking, the lyrics are basic and Weezy doesn’t go as hard as in the previous Carter albums or other rappers for that matter. Are there famous punch lines in the album? Yes there are, not as many as I hoped so, but still watch out for your friends because they will post them on their Facebook status asap.

However, some of the songs that I liked from “Tha Carter IV” are “Mirrors” ft Bruno Mars, “President Carter” and “So Special” ft John Legend.

Lil Wayne will always be a multifaceted performer, always trying new things and having no ceilings (pun intended) when it comes to rapping, but as “Tha Carter IV” doesn’t live up the hype, I really hope Weezy steps up his game and comes back with a more elaborate album that keeps his unique punchline driven lyrics that made everybody once say “that’s the best rapper alive”.
