This evening, Fitz and the Tantrums announced the release of “Spark,” the second single from their sophomore album, More Than Just a Dream. Like “Out of My League,” the first single from the album, “Spark” has the unique sound of Fitz and the Tantrums—simultaneously retro and fresh with an upbeat hook that sticks in everyone’s mind in the best way.
Starting with a defiant statement on how they aren’t going anywhere—including such lines as “Ain’t temporary no/This shit is not for play” and “We take the lead/No, we’re never gonna follow”—the song builds until the speakers and building are about to explode. Think of it as the sophisticated version of Ke$ha’s blow (which, before you go thinking I’m all highbrow, I ALSO love).
The band premiered the single with an audio YouTube video rather than a full music video. Instead of simple static album artwork, the video shows what I have decided is the back alley behind a music club. A pulsing pink neon heart, the image from the album artwork, sits in the alley. Pretty classy for only the audio, right?
Unfortunately, you can’t buy this one just yet—it’s listed as “Album Only” on iTunes. Until the release of More Than Just a Dream on May 7, check out the video above to listen to this awesome single—that’s what I’ll be doing!
