The TYF Monthly Mixtape: June 2019

In our new feature TYF Monthly Mixtape our music writers share Spotify playlists of the songs – new and old – they’ve had on repeat for the last month.
Think of it as a successor to our old Newish Music Tuesdays column. Here’s what we loved in June 2019.

One of the most notable pieces of music news from June came in the middle of the month, when prog legends King Crimson added their discography to Spotify. Long one of the staunchest hold-outs to streaming, Robert Fripp and co. have one of the most rewarding discographies in all of rock music, changing their sound radically with each ensuing era and lineup. They’re also one of my favorite bands of all time, and I’ve been listening to them a lot and revisiting favorites since they arrived on Apple Music in May. It’s honestly kind of weird to make a playlist and suddenly be able to drop songs from Larks Tongues’ in Aspic in there. I’ve included three of my favorite Crimson songs in my playlist this month, none of which sound all that much like the other two, to highlight what I love about this band, their virtuosity and their versatility. Also my playlist this month are songs from the new French Vanilla and Black Midi albums, both of which made my personal Top 10 mid-year list. I’ve also included a song from Life on Venus, whose new EP I discovered through Ned Raggett’s excellent guide to the Russian shoegazing scene for Bandcamp.

Alright, so, stay with me here. This month’s selections can be split into three sections. For starters, having just watched the home release of Captain Marvel made me fall in love with the movie all over again, and falling in love with Captain Marvel all over again means there’s gonna be some grungy/punky stuff involved. Secondly, I’m big on heartful songwriting, so most of my absolute faves here—like Passenger and Humbert Humbert—are here for that reason. Last but not least, I’ve been super intent on brushing my teeth and using mouthwash for the right amount of time, so there’s some one or two minute #classics on here that I use purely for those reasons—thanks, Bill Withers.

June is Pride Month, so for my playlist I thought I would pick some of my favorite songs from some of my favorite LGBTQ+ artists. The only exception is “I’m Gettin’ Bi’ from the soundtrack of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend because it’s just so good for the theme, despite it’s very Huey Lewis and the News-ishness. I specifically started with “Everything She Wants” because two years ago I was working at a retail store that had a pretty great Pride playlist, and to this day no song gives me more energy at 10 am after being awake for 4 hours already than “Everything She Wants” blasted at full volume. One of my favorite songs on the list is probably “Invisible Light,” because it’s from one of my favorite pop albums, by the Scissor Sisters, and features a monologue by Ian McKellen. Pretty cool.
