In a not-so-thriving industry in Australia, there are very few new artists keeping the passion and music alive. Whether it be through experimentation, confrontation, or easily playing memorable tunes that bring joy to listeners, the artists listed below embrace the talent and heart they have in being big, beautiful buoys keeping the next generation of Aussie musos afloat.
Bec Sandridge
South Coast’s quirky, queer queen revives all the best 80s pop vibes with influences such as Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, and Fleetwood Mac, she has the best idols to strongly lead the way for the future of girl pop. Winning Triple J Unearthed’s Yours and Owls comp in 2015, Sandridge earned the opportunity to open the Yours and Owls Festival that year, and has been shining brightly ever since. Having previously released banging singles such as “In The Fog, In The Flame” (2015), “You’re A Fucking Joke” (2016), “I’ll Never Want a BF” (2017) and “ANIMAL” (2018), Bec continues to thrive in 2019 with her newest single “Eyes Wide” that is bound to keep her heading up.
Cry Club
As described in their Triple J Unearthed bio, “Cry Club – a 2 piece noisy queer pop band” are a cornerstone for the revival of pop punk in Australia, and are surely on the rise. Active since January 2018, the two genius’ behind Cry Club Music had a huge first year, featuring all over Sydney and Wollongong with RAAVE Tapes, Moaning Lisa, and Bec Sandridge and have released two singles in that time; “Walk Away” and “DFTM”. Both singles are accompanied by artistic and angsty music videos that are bound to make your emo heart flutter.
Sloan Peterson
Adopting the name of Ferris Bueller’s stunning girlfriend, vintage goddess Sloan Peterson rocks a bit of Lana Del Ray and Nancy Sinatra aesthetic as well as Bowie and Elvis influences. Spending her teenage years living with her sister in Sydney and home recording her own original work, Peterson has founded and fronted two of her own bands, the first being the Black Zeros and since 2017, Sloan Peterson. “A love child of ‘50s guitar pop and modern garage rock”, Peterson lights the flame for the retro souls in Australian music.
Hollie Col
Influenced by pop-folk artists Vance Joy, James Bay, and the Lumineers, Sydney singer-songwriter Hollie Col creates soulful and simple, yet deep and dynamic tunes that can only be described as memorable and raw. Handling the universal and powerful emotions of a well travelled musician, Col has blessed our ears since 2017 with 3 singles and an EP in tow. Sporting the classic high school muso girl energy, Col emits her cheeriness and every other emotion into her music, producing an undeniable passion- something that is so rare in music nowadays.
Majun Bu
When ska meets hip hop and electro swing, you get the twisted and fabulous Majun Bu. This energetic five-piece from Sydney have been a major contributor to the longevity of Australian live music with their perfect synchronicity and syncopation. Their funk-filled live shows and soulful tracks take you back to a 90s house party straight out of 10 Things I Hate About You, with the sweet addition of trumpet lines to kick in the lovable band of lads. Their perfectly candid tracks such as “Artist” as well as nostalgic tunes “Lucky For Me” and “Rock to the Rhythm” hold Majun Bu up high on my list of favourite new Aussie acts.
