When we first heard about Alex Barnes AKA Girl Wilde, she had a relatable and catchy song “Nervous Breakdown” but just recently she dropped another song, “Fake Louis.” Girl Wilde was born from a desire to not be struck down by a certain genre, expectations, and trends. She’s working hard on making a sound that is truly her own and we can agree with that! Check out our interview with her below.
The Young Folks: First off, let’s get to know more about you! For all of us jamming out to your music, we want to know how you first got your start in the music industry?
Girl Wilde: When I was about twelve I started working with some of the guys from Miami Sound Machine. They helped me structure my songs and record them. From then on I knew it was what I wanted to do. I moved out to LA at eighteen knowing no one except my singing coach. I just started making friends and creating.
TYF: When did you make the decision that this is a career you’ll be putting your 100% into?
GW: When I left high school my sophomore year.
TYF: I always love to know this next one – what do you think you’d be doing if you didn’t end up choosing this career path?
GW: I would want to be a therapist. Or an archeologist.
TYF: We’re here to talk about “Nervous Breakdown” which you released late last year. It’s such a catchy song but states some real things people actually go through. How did this idea for the song and lyrics come about for you?
GW: Thank you I’m really happy that people can relate. The past two years were really tough for me and the entire time I was just like “here comes another nervous breakdown!”. The song sounds like it’s about a romantic partner but I hope people can apply it to different types of relationships in their lives.
TYF: Reading previous interviews, it sounded like a pretty fun session while putting it all together! What is a typical day in the studio or a recording session like for you?
GW: It usually starts with a lot of food. There’s no routine for me though. Sometimes I go in with ideas, some days we start with sharing inspiration, some days we talk the entire time and end up writing a song at the end of the day. Usually ends with food too.
TYF: How about for when you write songs? How do you go about finding inspiration to finally putting everything together?
GW: It usually starts with an experience that I want to share or a lyrical idea and then grows from there.

TYF: What’s next for you?
GW: I’m really excited to release more material and visuals in the new year.
TYF: What goals you wish to accomplish in 2019?
GW: Putting out the EP and playing a show with someone I admire.
