Last Tuesday marked the first night of Lauv’s headlining “I Met You When I Was 18” tour which kicked off at The Independent in San Francisco, California. The 36-city tour chose the Bay, naturally, to start things since Lauv himself is from the Bay. Having been excited about this concert since it was first announced late last year, we were definitely there to support! However, we were very keen on seeing the singer-songwriter Ashe open for the show. (BTW, we interviewed her a few months ago which you could read here!)
To give you a little background, The Independent is a semi-lowkey venue located in the Mission District and one of the very few venues that are 21+. The venue is SUPER intimate so yes, it was very cramped inside but what else would you have expected from a sold out show?
Only two acts were lined up so around 8:30 PM Ashe hit the stage to some eager fans waiting for the Lauv’s set. See, we knew what a powerhouse Ashe was but for those just hearing Ashe’s name for the first time, no one knew who she was. Dawning an orange peacoat/raincoat with some major bohemian vibes performing barefoot on-stage, Ashe’s natural laid back aesthetic slowly rippled throughout the room.
It wasn’t until when she performed her second song when everything clicked for majority of the audience. Fans of Louis The Child and Whethan are in the same pool of Lauv fans so when Ashe performed “Right To It”, you literally saw everyone’s face of realization after they made the connection. Fun fact: Ashe and Louis The Child are actually really good friends hence why they collaborated.
She pauses after this song, recollects herself, and offers people to play a drinking game whenever she shouts “Woo!” Then sings the memorable lyrics of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” song with a transition into Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness.” A simple transition and so effortless. The songs reflected to exactly what everyone felt in her presence: happy, chill, good. She captivated the audience all within the few songs she introduced herself with.
Near the end of her set, she teased her possible new single “Choirs” and ended with her current single “Girl Who Cried Wolf.” Again, all very effortless and entrancing each attendee between each note or word that was elongated.
Ashe is the type of friend you wish you had who can easily show off their personality with everyone else. NGL, I actually tweeted and DM’d her how much I was a huge fangirl of her because yes, that’s normal to do. What you see online is literally what you get in real life. The friend everyone wants to be friends with and someone who will have no shame in being a complete goofball with you. If Ashe ever headlines back in San Francisco, we’ll catch you in the front row.
