Just in time for the new year comes a new single from Party Nails, “So Broke.” The song is the LA singer-songwriter’s second collaboration with LA electronic duo Battle Tapes, their last creation together being 2015’s “Solid Gold.”
According to Party Nails, the upbeat synthpop anthem has been in the works for some time, so she is happy to finally share it with listeners. “Earlier in 2017 I had written a few songs about being broke and what it feels like, especially in today’s status-obsessed world. But the songs all felt too sad. Then a few months ago Riley [of Battle Tapes] sent me an instrumental he had been working on, and I instantly loved it and wrote the whole song quickly,” she says. “I felt nervous but excited to be talking so plainly about how I actually felt at the time, as opposed to an abstraction. Riley, Josh and I passed the song around a few times before finishing it up together. I’m really happy with the record. I love working with my babes Battle Tapes.”
The music video for “So Broke” was written by Party Nails and brought to life by a two-woman team—Bia Jurema, who directed, shot, and edited it, and assistant Naz Massaro. It shows Party Nails washing her cherry-red Mustang on a sunny day, dressed in a casual top and distressed denim shorts. When she sees a man in a fancy suit, she decides to use him to clean the car, engaging viewers with a playful, gritty metaphor about the anger that accompanies hard work gone unnoticed. “So Broke” is Party Nails’ most recent release since the EP Come Again, which introduced her to the world in February 2017. Its tracks have since received acclaim from outlets like Noisey and been featured in playlists by Spotify, Nike, and Victoria’s Secret. 2018 is sure to be an eventful year for Party Nails—in an upcoming article by Alternative Press, she will be included in a list of “Female Artists to Know”; additionally, she is working on her first LP and planning a spring tour.
