Panorama Music Festival brings big names to NYC

In just its second year of existence, the Panorama Music Festival did much to excite its fans and concert goers. Be it the countless musical artists and acts they lined up for the three-day event in New York City, or the various food, drink, and merch vendors and the interactive art exhibits, Panorama surely delivered.

Brought to us by Goldenvoice (who also run Coachella), Panorama took over Randall’s Island in New York from July 28 to 30, offering an outdoor concert venue with such great talents such as Frank Ocean, MGMT, Tyler The Creator, Glass Animals, Spoon, MO, and more.

Glass Animals seemed to be the show-stealer at this year’s festival. Not only did they perfectly execute their best songs from “Gooey” and “Youth” to “Life Itself” and “Pork Soda”, but they were spot on in choosing their set. They sensed the crowd and knew which song to play after which, and at one point, you could see Dave Bayley shaking his head at suggested songs until he decided Agnes would be the song to play next.

Vince Staples exhilarated the crowd right off the bat with “Party People”, and continued to bring that fast-paced sound with “Surf” and “Hands Up”. Other key artists were MO, which had the small tent packed to the seams, Spoon, with their ever classic set containing “I Turn My Camera On” and “The Underdog”, and of course, Tyler, the Creator, with his live debuts of several songs, including “November” and “Boredom”.

But it was Frank Ocean that truly won over Panorama. First, he had Spike Jonze film his entire set. And while there were some delayed starts to some songs, that wasn’t cause for panic for Ocean or the people in the crowd, whom he delicately sang “Close to You” and “Thinkin’ About You” with everyone singing along in unison.

Last year’s first annual Panorama blessed us with such musical acts like Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, Schoolboy Q, Major Lazer, and more. And if this year sounds like a step-up from last, we can only imagine what next year will bring.

Panorama ensures the best concert experience for its guests, and that includes a completely artistically component that’s 100% interactive and has you wondering why other music festivals on Randall’s Island (not to name names) aren’t up to par. The Lab is Panorama’s artistically immersive exhibit away from the crowd at Nine Inch Nails or Tame Impala.

Essentially, it’s a 360 degree dome– a la Disney’s Epcot– that bring a certain type of mindfulness to the hectic city scenes. Colors and lights don’t even begin to describe the lucid visual displays as a calming yet aspiring soundtrack is played in the background. Featuring all New York City artists, the Lab is just one of the many things that set Panorama aside from the standard music festival.
