R.E.M. are one of the most important artists in the history of American rock music. They pioneered the alternative rock genre and influenced countless artists over the course of their 31 year career. For the third episode of TYF’s new music podcast This is Pop? , I was joined by TYF music and film writer Will Ashton to discuss the career, discography and legacy of this legendary band.
Owing to the band’s long career and sizable output, this episode is a little lengthy – over two hours long! You might want to listen to it in chunks. This installment also features some audio improvements over the last two. Let us know what you think of the new sound levels!
You can listen to (and download) the second episode of TYF’s This is Pop? Podcast below via Soundcloud.

As promised in the episode, here’s the unreleased demo of “Catapult” that R.E.M. cut with producer Stephen Hague in 1982
At the end of every episode of This is Pop?, I and my guest talk about our favorite recent songs. For episode three, Will chose “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar and I picked “In Undertow” by Alvvays. You can hear those songs by clicking the links.
