Album Review: Kasabian – “For Crying Out Loud”

Bursting onto the scene in 2004 with the swagger of Oasis, Kasabian were a chart-topping band for over a decade going from strength to strength. With their captivating guitar riffs, hip-hop breakouts and distinctive electronic pulses Kasabian have definitely experimented with their rock ‘n roll origins over the years. Having hit somewhat of a hurdle in 2014 with 48:13 when attempting to try-out the dance genre lead to declining album sales, the band now seem to be back on track. For Crying Out Loud is packed full with big chorus’s and simple indulgences, showcasing the distinct talent Kasabian hold.

Written in just six weeks, it gave fans the impact and immediacy they so desperately desired. The first track “III Ray (The King)” exudes rock goodness, rising and falling like ocean waves on a stormy day, it launches a roaring chorus and intense guitar jams. Ending with a drop enough to make any festival goer lose their minds.

An early album present was the single “You’re In Love With A Psycho”. Beginning with catchy guitar strums the song soon steers into familiar territory with hip-hop beats, bass lines and absentminded synths. Maintaining the same beats recognised in the first few bars throughout, the song never strays from its repetitive tempo, however, this strangely gives it a uniquely enjoyable, foot tapping groove. Having been penned in ten minutes by vocalist and guitarist Sergio Pizzorno it holds an impressive entity to Kasabian’s collection.

Bringing back the routes of rocky guitar music is “Comeback Kid”. The quirky, chaotic song features on FIFA 17’s soundtrack, sporting lyrics like “Nosebleed in a pound shop” and “Big cheese in a bedsit” it definitely showcases the band’s wacky, fun side in the best way. Describing the album as a ‘simple rock ‘n roll’ album, Tom Meighan proves a point with this track, its simple beat and strange lyrics illustrates a good song doesn’t need to be made complicated.

Other tracks include the heavily synthesised, disco-rocker “Are You Looking For Action” and the spectacularly upbeat “Bless This Acid House”. Choosing a more original path Kasabian show rock ‘n roll can be simple yet fabulously fun. Holding perfect festival vibes the rock filled guitar instrumentals, effective synth beats and bold backing vocals combine to create a positive, mood boosting hit.
