Just last week, Greta Van Fleet, a new rock band from Frankenmuth, Michigan, released its debut single, “Highway Tune.” The song is a powerful dose of the energy contained in the band’s first major label EP, Black Smoke Rising, which will be released on April 21. Listen to it here:
From the opening riff, it’s clear that Greta Van Fleet is the kind of band who would put on a rousing live performance. The song hearkens back to the kind of explosive rock and roll that dominated the ‘60s and ‘70s, with strong vocals, a wild guitar solo, and a good-sized helping of bravado. Of course, the lyrics about highways are an added bonus, making the single especially suitable for summer road trips.
Greta Van Fleet is made up of three brothers—twins Josh Kiszka (vocals) and Jake Kiszka (guitars), plus their younger brother Sam Kiszka (bass)—as well as their best friend, Danny Wagner (drums). The band members are still young—not all of them were able to vote in the last national election—but they’ve been raised on the greats, from Jimi Hendrix to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and they seem ready to put their own spin on what they’ve learned from them. It’s no wonder that the band will soon go on tour with The Struts, who have amassed a loyal following with their larger-than-life glam rock sound.
