On March 23, Kendrick Lamar shared an Instagram post of the roman numeral “IV.” That night, “The Heart Part 4” was released on all streaming services by Top Dawg Entertainment. This is the fourth installment in his series “The Heart.” “The Heart Part 1” was released in April 2010, “Part 2” was featured on Lamar’s mixtape Overly Dedicated, and “Part 3,” was released in 2012 featuring Ab-Soul and Jay Rock shorty after good kid, m.A.A.D city. “The Heart Part 4” is nearly five minutes of pure greatness. The track features vocals from American singer Khalid, and contains samples from “Don’t Tell a Lie about Me and I won’t Tell the Truth on You” by James Brown and “I Love You” by Faith Evans.
Lamar starts off the song by rapping about his success in the industry and traveling around the world, “round the atlas in this spaceship candy-coated.” About half way through, what many will consider part two of the track, the song turns political, and he takes shots at Donald Trump and the recent election. “Donald Trump is a chump, know how we feel, punk/ Tell ’em that God comin’/And Russia need a replay button, y’all up to somethin’”. Lamar also describes an unnamed rapper and suggests that this rapper is “tiptoeing” around his name. Lamar then boots himself and declares himself the greatest rapper alive, (“One, two, three, four, five / I am the greatest rapper alive”). He finished the song with the line, (“Y’all got till April the 7th to get ya’ll shit together”), presumably hinting at the release date of his fourth album.
