Winter weather is slowly departing and the snow is finally thawing away. Spring is now coming into full swing, and it’s bringing new music! Many of us need a playlist update to wipe away the groggy winter blues. So far this year we have been lucky enough to be granted two singles from Lorde and both Ed Sheeran and Drake have dropped new albums. While we wait for the flowers to bloom and even more hot tracks, here are some songs, new and old, to add to your music radar.
6. The Wombats – “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)”
If looking for a song to shout out at the top of your lungs, this is the perfect one. The guitar line that strums in the background strums and keeps the pacing up. The lead singer, Matthew Murphy, balances the strength of his voice perfectly. He is quieter on the verses but goes all out on the chorus with rousing accompanying shouts. It’s a fist pumper and can bring back a smile after a dull day. It’s hard to find songs nowadays in the alternative genre that make you want to jump up and dance, but this song is an exception.
5. Keith Urban feat. Carrie Underwood – “The Fighter”
Recently performed on the Grammys with Urban and Underwood themselves, this song from the Ripcord album does one thing. It propels us into hoping for more musical collaborations from them in the future. Many of us were scratching our heads at the beginning sounds but were soon digging the psychedelic vibes. While it was unusual considering both singers repertoires, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Underwood questions Urban while he reassures her, “When they try to get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter.” A twist on country is always welcome.
4. Lana Del Rey – “Honeymoon”
I have a particular soft spot for orchestral interludes, and the way Lana Del Rey employs the violin in modern music makes for a unique song. “Honeymoon”, though slower, does not drag. The vintage feel and her crooning voice helps to get the message of yearning love across. Tinkling piano makes it float and glitter, demonstrating a spring dream and young love.
3. Ed Sheeran – “Barcelona”

The almighty Ed Sheeran made a masterpiece on his recent album Divide: Barcelona. The imagery he creates makes us want to join him on his trip to Barcelona has he says, “Let’s pretend we’re dancing in the street” and “We’re going, somewhere where the sun is shining bright.” His interspersing of Spanish words and the folksy sound of the guitar leads us to want to travel and fly away to a warm and sunny place for spring break.
2. Passion Pit – “Take a Walk”
Although not a new song, there is no denying the contagious good feelings we capture from “Take a Walk.” The familiar “I take a walk, take a walk, take a walk, oh-oh” certainly encourages us us to get out of the house, literally, but there is a figurative message often overlooked. There is an underlying tense feeling accompanied with the lyrics, but the synths overpower it and focus on the chorus. The ear worm is convincing and spring isn’t the same if not taking a look back at this indie classic.
1. Lorde – “Green Light”

There’s no better way to head into April than taking a look at the Lorde song that brought her back to the music scene. Lorde not only crafts a masterful song in terms of musicality, but her lyrics are especially poignant. They’re a message of leaving your burdens behind and wanting to jump into the next adventure. She has trouble with love but is waiting “for the green light.” As all the plants grow back and come into bloom, it’s time to let go and look forward to fresh starts, and Lorde motivates us all in “Green Light.” The music video is another piece to look at, with contrasting lights and a sort of freedom as Lorde hangs out the window of a car, but her dancing is enough to hook us all.
Whether you’re spring cleaning or looking for a new direction to head in, these artists are sure to do the trick to get you up and motivated. Keep an eye out for new music!
