Getting to interview one of my all-time favorite bands is probably the highlight of my editorial career. I’m seriously not joking. If you haven’t heard of the Arizona-based alternative rock band called The Maine then I highly suggest you go and listen to their music ASAP so you can catch them at one of their The Lovely, Little, Lonely World Tour shows. (You can thank me later!)
Before the band hits the road, we got to chat with Kennedy Brock who plays guitar and is a backup vocalist in the band. He told us about life on the road, what it was like putting together the new album, “Lovely, Little Lonely”, and alien music.
TYF: What are your must-have essentials you like to have while on tour?
Kennedy Brock: Gotta have honey and tea for the voice. Five shows in a row can put a strain on your throat!
TYF: Any favorite cities you’re looking most forward to visiting during the tour?
Brock: I have so much fun traveling it’s hard to pick. I’m just happy to be anywhere but Arizona, it’s already summer and nearly 100 degrees at home.
TYF: What’s the craziest fan-related story that has happened on past tours?
Brock: How about the kid who crowd surfed to the front of the stage a month ago! He performed our guest vocal spot during the allotted segment then proceeded to ask us in front of 3,000 people in the crowd, “can my band open your Colorado show on this upcoming tour?” Obviously, we said yes! Such a crazy idea. So crazy it worked.
TYF: What can fans expect on a The Lovely, Little, Lonely World Tour show?
Brock: Just finished the set list this week so get ready for a lot of fun! We carefully picked a set of new and old and unplayed songs that’s going to fly by. Bring the noise!
TYF: As fans anxiously wait to hear the new album, “Lovely, Little Lonely”, can you tell us how the sound differs from previous albums?
Brock: The songs are more cohesive; that was the goal anyway. We feel like we achieved it.
TYF: I thought your album cover for “American Candy” depicted the whole sound of the album very well. What was the inspiration behind the album cover for “Lovely, Little Lonely”?
Brock: It’s that feeling you get in the deep end of the pool. Terrified but exhilarated. It’s the visual that started the whole process.

TYF: What is your writing process like and did it change from album to album?
Brock: This time around we played out the structures of songs on the computer more and jammed less. It’s always a goal to feel out of the area most comfortable while writing. The uncertainty is what sparks the creative side for us.
TYF: You guys have recently released a new song called “Black Butterflies and Deja Vu”, what was the inspiration behind this track?
Brock: That feeling when your words are lost on you.
TYF: Lastly, congratulations on the 10 year band anniversary. Looking back on the band’s success, how do you see the band’s sound changing another 10 years from now?
Brock: I think the only thing left to do is go to space and make alien music. But I hope we continue to grow and challenge ourselves into the future.
