Well, it actually isn’t- at least that’s what we’re supposed to believe. There are BIG differences between the movies- like this one stars Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage, while Taken stars Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson. Also, in Stolen, Cage’s daughter is kidnapped in New Orleans, while in Taken, Neeson’s daughter is kidnapped throughout Europe. Neeson’s daughter is kidnapped throughout Europe. But the biggest difference is that Cage is a reformed bank robber whose ex-partner sold him out to the cops, and kidnapped his daughter. Neeson is just naturally badass.
Coming out September 14th, the movie’s official synopsis (from the Millennium Films Ofwebsite) is that, “Master thief Will Montgomery is just released from the state penitentiary after serving a 10 year sentence, is contacted by Jonah, his ex comrade in crime, who is holding Will’s teenage daughter ransom in a hijacked taxi cab. Jonah will only surrender her when Will reveals the whereabouts of the 20 million dollars he contrived to conceal from their last robbery.” . . . . Ignoring the long run-on sentence and the wrong use of “contrived” (meaning artificial), the movie just sounds wrong. Whoever wrote the summary even mistyped the $20 to $10 million.
A better synopsis was taken from Upcoming Movies. “The story follows Will Montgomery (Cage), a master thief who has been sent to prison for 8 years after being double-crossed in a heist gone awry. Upon his release, he’s ready to leave his criminal past behind and rebuild his relationship with estranged daughter, Alison Loeb (Gayle). Montgomery’s former criminal cohorts and FBI agent Tim Harlend (Huston), are all convinced that the loot, totaling $10 Million dollars worth of bonds, was hidden away by Montgomery before he was sentenced. In order to get his hands on it, former partner in crime, Vincent (Lucas), kidnaps Alison and demands the loot as ransom; keeping her in a soundproofed trunk of a taxi cab on Mardi Gras day where she is nearly impossible to be discovered. Montgomery has only one day to deliver the $10 Million ransom, but much to the disbelief of both Vincent and the FBI, he does not actually have it. Montgomery is left with only one choice: To trust his instincts and join forces again with another old partner in crime, the beautiful, sexy and smart Riley Jeffers (Akerman). Together they must pull off one more heist so he can get his daughter back… before it’s too late.”
Well, looking on the other hand, it can still *be considered* a newish idea since it is a reformed bank robber whose ex-partner sold him out. (Yes, let’s just ignore all our movie knowledge for now) And the kidnapped daughter is actually in a moving cab, not in one single place (which I qeustion why not place the film in New York City instead of New Orleans since everyone knows NYC is a huge maze of cabs), so it’s actually harder for Cage to find her. But in all honesty, it’s been done too many times. Take any movie where someone gets sold out by their seemingly trustworthy partner, and take any movie where a kidnapping takes place in return for ransom, and you get this.
