When Walt Disney Studios purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012 for over $4 billion, a new Star Wars trilogy was immediately planned. Back in December 2015, the world finally got Chapter seven of the universe in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was met with critical and audience acclaim while also earning over $2 billion in worldwide revenue, making it the third highest grossing film of all time (without adjusting for inflation.) While Episode VIII has yet to reveal much about itself thus far, it appears Disney isn’t backing down from the giant cash cow of the Star Wars universe, as the teaser for a new spin-off feature, Rogue One, was released today.
Set shortly before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and with the newfound establishment of the Galactic federation, a group of rebel fighters set out on a mission to steal the plans for the newly crafted Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s tyrannical rule. Starring Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna just to name a few, Rogue One is looking to be not only the series’ first spin-off and heist feature, but it could also turn out to be the first Star Wars movie that explores the “War” aspects of this universe, especially from the battlefield shots in teaser for example.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently set to release on December 16. While fans will have to wait a while before learning more, you can always just watch the first teaser below a thousand times in preparation. Although, it should be noted that anyone who isn’t a fan of grating siren effects should be wary of the teaser’s second half.
