Magic is alive in first trailer for Mary Poppins Returns

Walt Disney Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the classic 1964 film, Mary Poppins.

Rob Marshall directs the film from a script by David Magee.  The film stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, and Emily Mortimer.  Dick Van Dyke will return for a cameo as Mr. Dawes, Jr., making him the only actor from the first film to come back in the sequel.  Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were hired to write both original songs and the score for the sequel.

The studio has yet to release a synopsis for the film.  What is known about the film is that it’s set to take place 20 years following the events of the first film during the Depression Era and “will draw from existing Poppins tales in the rest of author P.L. Travers’ 1934-1988 children’s book series.”

The first Mary Poppins film led the 37th Academy Awards with 13 nominations, taking home five awards in total.  Julie Andrews won Best Actress for the title role.  The Sherman Brothers took home two awards: Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and Best Original Score.  Mary Poppins picked up it’s other two wins in Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects.  The film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Art Direction (Color), Best Cinematography (Color), Best Costume Design (Color)

Disney will release the film in December 2018.
