Wow, I have to say I’m impressed by The 5th Wave’s international trailer. I’m not sure what I was expecting from the movie adaptation of Rick Yancey’s popular young adult thriller, but I was very cautiously optimistic that it would at least be a decent movie. From the trailer, it doesn’t feel so much like the YA movies we’ve recently become familiar with. It’s not set in a dystopian world nor does it feature the supernatural. Rather, it is set in our real world and explores what could happen if alien life decided to invade the planet.
Chloe Grace Moretz stars as Cassie Sullivan, a girl trying to survive the invasion. The trailer takes us through the start of the invasion up until the start of the 5th Wave. Ron Livingston plays her father, who taught Cassie a useful set of survival skills. We get glimpses of Liev Schreiber as Colonel Vosch, Nick Robinson as Ben, Maika Monroe as Ringer, and Alex Roe as Evan. The trailer only teases these characters roles and doesn’t spoil how they play into the story, which I appreciated.
I hope the movie lives up to the book, from what I see, it seems very loyal to the story. The January release date has me slightly worried, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that the film ends up being a bright spot in early 2016 releases.
The 5th Wave invades theaters on January 15, 2016.
