That’s right folks! If you’re a swooner that desperately wants this new generation to learn the ways of the old and have a movie to go with your idol, than wait no more! (That would sound perfect if you read it in a 1920s newsboy voice).
Yes, it’s true; Martin Scorsese is making a biopic on Frank Sinatra. In fact, Scorsese recently signed on the screenwriter of The Hunger Games (suddenly interested now, are we?) Billy Ray. This has been said to be not only about his life onstage, but his life offstage- with his connections to the mob, or his various relationships.
Martin Scorsese has had the idea for a few years now and this is the first news that has been heard as of yet. With full support of Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Tina, Scorsese has unlimited power with what he wants to bring to film. Looking back at Scorsese’s last films (i.e., all of them), it is obvious that he will not shy away from featuring the mob and any violence.
It has been said that Scorsese was planning on portraying Sinatra through different stages of his life, and he recently stated that he did want Al Pachino and Robert De Niro ( who are working with Scorsese on The Irishman) to play Sinatra and Dean Martin. And since he hasn’t picked an actor to play Sinatra yet, he may be choosing to use several different actors to play him over the years. In an interview with Shortlist, he has even said that he would like to work with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire, and Johnny Depp (hint hint). In that same interview he has also said that Frank Sinatra has changed the image of Italian Americans, while still focusing on civil rights, the mob, and politics.
When asked which of his movies were most similar, he stated that, “…in structure I’d like it to be more like Goodfellas. But like The Aviator, it only deals with certain times in his life. We can’t go through the greatest hits of Sinatra’s life. We tried this already. Just can’t do it. So the other way to go is to have 3 or 4 different Sinatras. Younger, older, middle-aged, very old. You cut back and forth in time- and you do it through the music. See what I’m saying? So that’s what we’re trying for. It’s very tricky.”
Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men), Peter Guber (Batman), Cathy Schulman (Crash) and Tina Sinatra are all set to produce the film.
So far, all we have to do is wait, since while there is no set date on the biopic, we can be sure it won’t be soon, since Scorsese is currently working with Leonardo DiCaprio on The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence with Daniel Day-Lewis and then The Snowman. So we’re basically thinking it will be released 2014 or later. Comment below if you have any actor in mind who looks like Sinatra (people say Michael Fassbender could pull it off). But for now, listen to one of Frank Sinatra’s famous songs, New York New York:
