Hype keeps building for Ridley Scott’s latest entry in his beloved Alien franchise, and now the world can see the official return of his spooky space monsters.
The second official trailer for Alien: Covenant hit the web on Tuesday and gives a more detailed layout of what’s expected for the sci-fi horror flick. Starring Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse), Billy Crudup (Watchmen), and James Franco (127 Hours), the new trailer details the adventure of a colonization crew (comprised entirely of couples) landing on a distant planet. They find some very suspicious things: wheat, no forms of wildlife, and a giant spaceship that has more horrifying secrets inside than they could ever imagine.
As expected, the trailer continues to reassure fans that this is most definitely an Alien film: there’s the muted-green and grey color palette, eggs, face-huggers, sweaty people running down spaceship hallways, convulsing bodies on the verge of death, blood, and people holding guns while trying to find something horrifying. What’s interesting to point out are the little details in the trailer and connecting it to the movie details. Ridley Scott has said that while this will be closer to the original Alien films, Alien: Covenant will also serve as a prequel to 2012’s Prometheus. The Covenant trailer seems to allude that humans have been in this location before the new crew have arrived (hence the wheat), the ship that they find on the planet seems to have been inhabited before them, and Waterston’s character manages to find a set of dog tags on the ship. Considering that Noomi Rapace is listed in the cast of Covenant, it could allude to her presence in the film.
Regardless of speculation and universe connection, Alien: Covenant just looks like a good scary time. Now not having to worry about constructing larger canvases for the likes of The Martian and Exodus: Gods and Kings, it’s refreshing to see that Scott still looks like he knows how to create tension and fear in tight locations, exactly where his 1979 original classic thrived. And then there are those slippery, sinister Xenomorphs. The little glimpses seen in the trailer seem to allude to them being entirely CGI this time around, including the one in the rather impressive-looking final scene in the trailer. That could work, as long as Scott sticks to the rule of Jaws by showing as little of them as possible in the actual film. The first trailer released back in December played itself up like a slasher movie in space (because someone asked for a shower sex murder scene in Alien, apparently), and the new trailer seems to have the movie play like the presence of the Xenomorphs forces the dread of the situation to close in on the crew as evidence by the closing door shots in the trailer.
